How Do You Take The Next Step After Senior+ Career Roles? Part 1: Pitfalls Of Major Career Moves
The first 2 senior+ roles you take on are exciting opportunities. They start your process of building a body of work and setting yourself up for a high career ceiling.
I have been on both sides. I have been recruited for a few startup CEO roles at MLOPs/Engineering startups. I’ve also been tapped to lead the professional services business unit at a large company.
I said “No” because what’s right in front of me isn’t always what’s right for me. Some of those startups, I really wasn’t the right person to lead. Others were setups to fail. Being capable is not always enough to be successful.
I am a better advisor to the large firm and that’s really what they needed me for. They thought they had to put me in the job, but we worked out a much better arrangement. Saying “Yes” can result from a discovery process.
On the other side, I have hired Data and Analytics Organizational leaders and C Suite Data Scientists. I have brought in senior+ level Researchers and niche talent from across the field. I have gotten proficient at it and have seen several flavors of the process.
I have broken this up into 3 posts so you don’t have to read what you aren’t interested in:
