Right now can seem like a strange time to talk about performance reviews. Most companies have just finished or are several months away from starting the process. Effective performance reviews start at the beginning of the year.
Start with the purpose of performance reviews:
Encourage and reward exceptional performance.
Create a roadmap for low performers to improve.
My goal is to get everyone into the first bullet point. The opportunity presented to leaders is to set everyone up for success. This approach is far more effective than reacting to what people did. The beginning of February is when performance reviews start.
