IBM’s Latest Study: How to create business value with AI

They surveyed 35 projects that generated significant business returns and aggregated their findings. Many companies use AI for one-off projects and have not integrated it into their transformation strategy. They have data teams and projects running, but impacts are only being realized at the team level. 1 in 4 businesses has moved past prototypes and pilots to operationalize data science initiatives.

This lines up with my experiences as well. The implications are that most businesses have spent the last 3 years stuck in the prototyping stage of maturity. Data science without strategy is a cost center. Over the next 2 years, there will be a significant uptick in demand for data and AI strategy.

Open Source Security

Dark reading published this post on a decrease in data science adoption for open source software. They based that claim on Anaconda’s 2022 State of Data Science. The same day a Python security defect made headlines for being in 350K open source projects.

My takeaway is the prevalence of data science teams with little or no guidance for adopting open source tools. As long as security decisions are left up to people without a background in secure software development practices, vulnerabilities will be rampant.

MIT Technology Review CIO Vision 2025: Bridging the Gap Between BI and AI

This survey of 600 C-level executives focuses on mid to large companies. The top line number is: 78% of executive leaders say that scaling AI use cases to create business value is their top priority for their data strategy. 40% plan to increase spending on new or existing data and AI platforms.

Finance and IT were the only 2 groups, with over 50% of respondents reporting widescale adoption of use cases.

30% of companies believe that in about 2 years, AI’s most significant impact will come from increased revenue. Improved efficiency and productivity are right behind it at 26%. Those represent the long-term goals for data strategy.

Again, these line up with what I see as well.
