The Biggest Tech Trend That Most People Are Missing
I was listening to an interview this morning, and the question was asked, “Which companies will be the big winners from crypto and Web3?” This question gets asked at the beginning of every hype cycle and is always answered wrong. The correct answer reveals a technology trend that has been building for almost 30 years.
In every cycle, people are anchored to an old paradigm. They look at the business landscape as it once was. Competitive advantages were built over several years and sometimes over a decade. Companies were expensive to launch and even more expensive to grow.
The core issues were labor, growing a customer base, and the resources necessary to support business operations. The landscape of the 80s and 90s was dominated by large incumbents built over decades.
Startups were made possible by technology. Startups drove the Dot Com boom and bust. Ask an analyst in the late 90s, “Who will benefit most from the Dot Com boom?” they rattled off IBM, HP, Microsoft, and other incumbent tech companies.
